6 Backhanded Compliments Moms Hate

I started thinking of all the comments other people, often times other moms, make at each other that are supposed to be a compliment but at the same time seem like a diss. Backhanded compliments. Are they genuine? Who knows. I'm sure sometimes they are. And sometimes they might be a little bit calculated. I crowd sourced a little with some other mom bloggers from my blogging communities to see what their pet peeves were, too.

6 Backhanded Compliments Moms Hate

1. "I don't have time to go to the gym like you do."

We all have 24 hours in our days and the gym takes only 1. If you don't want to go to the gym just own up to it and say you don't want to. Don't hide behind "I'm busier than other moms!".

2. "I wouldn't feel comfortable nursing in public."

So I guess they're basically saying I shouldn't be comfortable nursing in public. Or that my nursing in public is making them uncomfortable.

3. "You've got your hands full!" - Jaimi from The Stay At Home Mom Survival Guide

Implying that it seems like your children are too much for you to handle or that they are misbehaving. I think instead, we would like to hear, "wow you really have those kids under control!"

4. "My husband is on a fishing trip this weekend, so I know how you feel as a single parent." - Shanna from Peyton's Penny Pinching Momma

Single moms would beg to differ. One weekend is not the same as a lifetime of doing it all alone.

5. "I could never be a stay at home mom like you." - this was a popular pet peeve for MANY mom bloggers.

This, in all its variations, you can even replace SAHM with homeschool parent. "Must be nice to be able afford to do that", "How nice, you get to relax all day". It's definitely not relaxing, lol. And afford often doesn't have anything to do with it. Just because someone is a SAHM doesn't mean their husband is bringing in 6 figures.

6. "Are you the mom or babysitter? Mom?! Okay!" - Hailey from Secular Peaceful Parenting

I try to take that as a compliment because I look young, but sometimes I wonder "do I not look 'mom enough'? Or do I not dress 'mom enough'?" Once people see me interact with my daughter they figure out I am the mom.

Let's hear from you!

What are some backhanded compliments you receive as a mom that just get under your skin?

  4. You look comfortable. Yup, thanks, haven't showered in days, no idea when the last time I shaved was, and I threw on whatever was clean or at least didn't look like it was covered in poop or food. Thanks for noticing.
